Promoting undergraduate student succ

The Division of Undergraduate Education provides students and instructors with resources that promote academic excellence and student success. Our office serves as the central administration for a number of organizational units across campus that enhance the undergraduate student experience.

Grant Awarded to UCR

FCHASS Studentsund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE): Undergraduate Education was awarded grant funding to expand and evaluate CHASS Connect (First-Year-Experience for the College of Humanities, Arts ands Social Sciences), a year long comprehensive set of transition courses for freshmen that are structured with interdisciplinary course content, foster a sense of community, and offer assistance with the transition from high school to college through personal and academic support and peer mentorship. The project will include the development of a model program that is supported by experimental research findings and replicable on other campuses.

University Writing Program Moves

Established in 2007, the University Writing Program is responsible for administering courses that fulfill the campus writing requirement, and for developing initiatives that promote and support writing across the curriculum. The UWP administers English 1ABC as well as the examinations and courses related to the Entry-Level Writing Requirement (the Analytical Writing Placement Exam, Basic Writing 3 [ESL instruction], English Writing 4, and English 5). It also offers workshops, tutorials, and TA-training to departments across the campus to support the expansion of writing-intensive instruction across the curriculum. The program will move to its new permanent location, HMNSS 1003, starting Fall 2008.

Establishment of the First-Year Work Group

Through campus-wide collaborations (BCOE, CNAS, CHASS, UE, Honors, Student Life, Learning Center, Housing) the first year workgroup will provide an opportunity for participants to discuss critical issues, identify best practices and research, develop partnerships, and provide recommendations in support of undergraduate students through their first year at UCR.
